Abstract
TAIA-transnational aging between Africa and Italy brings together anthropologists of the Universities of Pavia, Milano-Bicocca, and Bologna to address the intersections between aging and migration in the transnational space that links Italy to the African continent. It focuses both on elderly Italians living in Tunisia and Senegal as well as on elderly members of the Tunisian and Senegalese diasporas in Italy. By exploring migratory trajectories in later life, collecting family and life histories, and conducting fieldwork research in urban and “inner areas”, this research project will provide original ethnographic material on aging and migration of academic and policy relevance. The Bologna Unit investigates, in particular, the migration and welfare policies shaping transnational aging. Main Results (Bologna Unit) • Training events on “Welfare and Transnational Aging” held in June and October 2025, featuring academic, civil society and trade union experts, and targeting researchers, students, social workers, welfare state and private sector representatives, among others. • One Participatory Workshop (October 2025) with civil society and trade union representatives on identifying needs and forms of transnational aging, and related policy analysis and advice. • Ethnographic data and on how welfare policies affect the choices and life trajectories of aging migrants and expats, and the role of public and private actors in mediating their access to welfare benefits in Bologna and its province. • Scientific publications, including on: transnational aging and welfare, and on mobility and border policies in the Euro-African space.
