Abstract
The main objective of this project is to facilitate the linguistic representation of the complexity of gender in institutional texts, exploiting the possibilities offered by corpus linguistics, contrastive linguistics and artificial intelligence. In this light, our project intends to contribute to the development of a concrete tool in line with the transversal objectives of Mission 1 (Digitisation, Innovation, Competitiveness, Culture) and Mission 5 (Inclusion and Cohesion) of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (Piano Nazionale di Ripresa e Resilienza - PNRR): the design of an open-source tool, conceived for communicators of public institutions to support the drafting and reading of institutional texts from a gender-sensitive perspective. In order to reach the main objective, two initial and two intermediate objectives have to be achieved (Figure 1): (1) initial theoretical objective; (2) initial applicative objective; (3) intermediate theoretical objective; (4) intermediate applicative objective. Objective (1) includes: the selection of institutional media text types in German, English and Italian on the basis of Italian legislation on transparency and right of access to administrative texts, EU legislation and legislation in Germany, Switzerland and the United Kingdom; the analysis of university guidelines for gender-sensitive language (German, English, Italian). Objective (2) is to create a management system for the comparable corpus of institutional texts; the construction of the comparable corpus (German, English, Italian); the creation of rules for the annotation of the corpus. Objective (3) provides for the identification of the linguistic strategies with which the institutional texts will be simplified, using gender-sensitive language. Objective (4) is the creation of the parallel corpus containing the source texts and the simplified texts from a gender-sensitive perspective: this will be used for the natural language processing (NLP) of the suggesting tool for linguistic simplification from a gender-sensitive perspective: the tool and the creation of a web platform constitute the final objective of the project (5). In the phase between objective (3) and objective (4) a psycholinguistic experiment will be carried out to verify the degree of difficulty of processing linguistic strategies. In the phases between objective (4) and objective (5) a further psycholinguistic experiment will be carried out to verify the applicability of the tool for gender-sensitive linguistic simplification.
