SCORPiò-NIDI. Comparative Analysis and Certified Reconstructions for a correct experimental archeology: Roman Scorpions and Ballistae for the Imperial mechanical culture, origin of European identity. Governance policy for the development and sustaina

PRIN 2022 Di Modica

Abstract

The project proposes the identification, classification and description of the impact marks generated by stone (ballistae) and dart throwers(scorpions or Roman catapults) present in large numbers on the northern section of the walls that connect Porta Vesuvio and Porta Ercolano, legacy of the Silla shoots (89 BC). The project will employ photogrammetric models and inverse modelling of the ballistic footprints to determine the mechanical properties of the wall’s materials. Once the density, the shape and volume of the thrown balls are known, it will be possible to calculate the impact kinetic energy and the initial throwing speed. The mechanical characterization will make the origin of the impact craters and the traces of rust generated by the tips of darts embedded in it clear to legible to visitors. It is the ambition of the proponents to adapt the canons of experimental archaeology to certify prototypes based on a digital organization of the sources. The same will serve as a reference for identifying new finds and verifying the originality of what is around on the web. A thematic platform will be able to provide adequate support for the production, storage and management process of data according to a systemic approach for a complete integration of knowledge in 3D galleries, that will attract an enlarged audience of users and the involvement of citizens, including people with disabilities. The multimodal and cross-media interest will fall on the social and economic development not only of the Campania region in which the Cultural Heritage insists. The dedicated platform will spread the culture of the imperial era by identifying the roots of European culture in line with the priorities set by the European Council.
