NRRP Projects – PhD programmes for digital and environmental transition, Public Administration, cultural heritage and NRRP research

The University of Bologna’s contribution to NRRP investments “Extension of the number of PhD programmes and innovative PhD programmes for Public Administration and cultural heritage” (M4C1 – Investment 4.1) and “Advanced university education and skills – Support to PhD programmes for digital and environmental transition” (M4C1 – Investment 3.4).

The number of PhD degrees currently awarded in Italy is among the lowest in the EU and has steadily decreased over the last few years (approximately 40% in ten years from 2008 to 2019). In Italy, only 1 in 1,000 people in the 25-34 age group completes a PhD programme each year, compared to an EU average of 1.5 (2.1 in Germany).

The measure covered by investment 4.1 aims to bridge the numerical and age gaps with the main European partners and combat brain drain. For these purposes, the project intends to raise the number of PhD positions by 3,600 starting from 2021, by opening three cycles that will award 1,200 scholarships each.

The measure covered by investment 3.4 funds other 500 3-year scholarships to support PhD programmes in digital and environmental transition.
