Learning outcomes

Acquire knowledge of the pathophysiological mechanisms of cardiovascular diseases. The issues relating to certification for competitive sport in subjects with previous cardiovascular pathologies will be addressed according to the COCIS 2023 guidelines, with a specific focus on subjects affected by ischemic heart disease, arrhythmic diseases, congenital heart diseases and subjects carrying devices. The student will acquire skills on the role of cardiovascular health monitoring tools used during sporting activities. The student will acquire skills on gender differences in the development of cardiovascular complications during physical and sporting activity.

Course contents

Cardiovascular risk, atherosclerosis and heart disease in young, adult and elderly subjects during sport


Gender differences in the development of cardiovascular complications during physical activity and sports.


Sports fitness in subjects with previous cardiovascular pathology according to the COCIS 2023 guidelines, with particular attention to ischemic heart disease, arrhythmic diseases, subjects with congenital heart disease and subjects carrying devices.


Sudden cardiac death in athletes: causes and treatment.

The course will be delivered in a blended mode, online and in person.

Assessment methods

The final assessment will be a written multiple-choice test. The time limit is one hour. The test determines a grade. Journal club activities conducted in the classroom reduce the number of quizzes the student will have to take by 50%, but do not determine a grade.
