Learning outcomes

The course is aimed at giving the advanced regulation of Insurance and banking sector, at EU level, as main player of the financial market, facing the new challenges of technological transformation and green transition. The course will showcase key aspects of corporate governance of financial players, crucial company functions related to risks, the role of the board of directors and prudential regulation. Insights will be given on the interplay between insurance and banking regulation vis a vis shareholders, regulators and stakeholders. The course will consider the impact of ESG factors on the banking and insurance business models, regulation and corporate governance rules. At the end of the course students will be able to manage legal rules of the financial sector with reference to solvency requirements, risk management and corporate governance. Students will be able to make indepth comparison between the banking and the insurance sector, to manage the different sources of legal rules applying to the insurance sector and the interaction of different regulatory bodies and supervising authorities, to evaluate the role of insurance and banks on global financial stability and their dynamics facing global crisis.

Readings/Bibliography

The teaching materials will consist solely of slides and selected academic papers, which will be made available on the course's virtual platform

Teaching methods

The teaching method will always include a brief lecture-style introduction and subsequent discussion. A Socratic method will be adopted primarily and students will be expected to prepare for and participate regularly in individual or group discussions in class. The course also relies on a case study method.

Assessment methods

The exam will be case-based and will consist of short open-ended questions.
