34353 - Training in Dental Materials

Academic Year 2025/2026

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Single cycle degree programme (LMCU) in School of Dentistry (cod. 5988)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the internship, the student has successfully attended the service assigned to him and therefore possesses a preparation that allows him to recognize, face and solve simple problems related to the use of dental materials.

Course contents

The purpose of the Dental Materials - internship course is to teach the student how to handle and use some of the materials covered in the lectures. At the end of the course the student, after having assimilated the properties and characteristics of the materials, must be able to use them correctly in both clinical and laboratory simulations.

-Tests with the Instron machine to determine the basic mechanical properties of several dental materials.

-Impression materials: take an impression in alginate, polyvinylsiloxane or other elastomer; make a laboratory silicone key;

· Dental casts: pouring of a study model with type III gypsum;

· Example of forming an acrylic prosthesis in a flask with self-curing resins;

· Composite restorative materials: simulation of use in class I fillings;

· Dental cements: spatulation of an oxyphosphate, zinc oxide / eugenol cement, glass ionomer cements; use of resinous cements in simulated coronal cementations;

· Practical demonstrations of CAD / CAM processing of ceramics and composite for prosthetic reconstruction;

· Practical demonstrations of the use of metals and metal alloys for rehabilitation

Readings/Bibliography

Teaching methods

Practical demonstration and students' ability to recognize, handle and apply the dental materials learned during the theoretical course

Assessment methods

During the oral or written exam, the student will have to describe and report from a physical, chemical, and operational point of view the types of dental materials learned in the theoretical course and express their appropriate use.

Teaching tools

Laboratory and classroom mannequins with equipment and materials suitable for teaching dental materials.
