Learning outcomes
The course will introduce students to ideas of justice --- of what living in a just society means across modern democracies. It will do so by critically examining the role that law plays in establishing a just order, asking when it helps and when it hinders just outcomes. At the end of the course, students will be able to define justice, understand its relationship to specific cultures, and offer arguments in favour of or against certain controversial laws that are designed to maintain order in society. Students will also be able to compare different national systems empirically, and also to develop hypothetical and normative arguments about law and order in the modern world.
