Course contents
The course focuses on ethnographic research practices used in anthropology and their relevance to work in the field of services and the social sector. The aim, pursued through a seminar-style course format, is to discuss how an ethnographic approach enables a deeper understanding of socio-cultural complexity and the development of critical operational tools for planning educational interventions.
Through the discussion of ethnographic works related to services and social policies, students will be encouraged to explore what is meant by fieldwork, what it entails to construct a participant observation setting by identifying research questions, what data collection techniques are used, and how to contextualize and discuss the collected data.
During the course, students will become familiar with the most relevant concepts and analytical tools for their educational path and, through the theoretical and methodological approach of anthropology, will develop the ability to critically reflect on the professional contexts in which they are or will be operating.
The course requires active student participation, both in the discussion of ethnographic texts provided by the lecturer and in ethnographic practice, through the formulation of a research question connected to their academic and professional interests. This question will be explored in the field through site visits and short ethnographic exercises.
