Course contents

English Language and Culture. A brief review of English grammar from B1.1 to B2– level. Students will continue to be divided into proficiency groups (the same as in the first year). The textbook used in class will depend on the level of each group and is the same as in the first year.

Readings/Bibliography

English File Digital Gold B1/B1+ – 4th edition (green book)

Teaching methods

The methods and techniques used may include: reading and comprehension exercises in small groups, grammar review focused on form both individually and in small groups, listening practice with group exercises, student presentations of lexical and grammatical material in a flipped classroom format, production of short texts, poems, and scripts based on the language presented in the textbook, Grammar-Drama activities (performing original scripts that illustrate grammar and pronunciation issues), songs, role plays, videos, collaborative and individual writing both on paper and on digital platforms such as Moodle, Padlet, etc.

Assessment methods

The final exam will take place at the end of the course and will be written. It will consist of a B2– grammar test based on the materials from the textbooks used, along with a short composition on everyday topics. Continuous assessment during the course may be adopted by some instructors, but it will not count toward the final exam.

Final exam sample: available on Virtuale (see here). The enrollment key to access it is: SFP2-fax (please note the use of uppercase and lowercase letters). This sample exam is intended primarily to illustrate the various types of tasks that may appear on the final exam. Several sections are included: grammar, vocabulary, idiomatic expressions, reading comprehension, listening (with audio transcript and 10 gaps to fill), and writing (minimum 150 words). Possible writing topics will be discussed during the lessons. The grading system assigns points for each correct answer and zero for blank or incorrect answers. The final result recorded on AlmaEsami is not a numerical grade but PASS/FAIL (IDONEO/NON IDONEO).

In case of failure, the exam can be retaken in consecutive sessions (i.e., there is no skipping of sessions or exam dates). Results will be sent by email by the instructors to each student, with detailed feedback for each part of the exam. Students are not required to formally accept the PASS result — it will be recorded automatically.

To take the exam, it is absolutely essential that the student is registered on AlmaEsami. No exam can be taken without formal registration. If students experience problems with the registration process, they must contact the Teaching Office (Ufficio Didattico) before the registration deadline. Once registration closes, no student can be added to the list.

Teaching tools

In addition to the textbook, students will work with presentations, audio clips, photos, online videos, Virtuale, and their own devices to complete activities, contribute materials on shared platforms, or ask questions online.

Listening activities will be based on the textbook used in the first and second year or on recommended pedagogical texts and videos.
