Learning outcomes
The students are expected to possess an excellent knowledge of the metalanguage, as well as the mechanisms, of the descriptive-analytical model of Portuguese. Moreover, they should be competent in all four communicative skills at the B2 level of the Common European Framework.
Course contents
The Portuguese and Brazilian Language and Linguistics Exercises 2 aim to consolidate and improve students' communication skills in Portuguese (European variety). The objective of the practical lessons is to provide the tools to achieve level B1+/B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Through language exercises, students will develop skills in the following areas:
Production (oral and written) and Comprehension (oral and written). At the end of the course, students will be able to communicate on more complex and abstract topics, express reasoned opinions, understand texts of medium difficulty and produce coherent discourse on a variety of familiar and more general topics.
Oral production: the student is able to interact in a conversation with a certain degree of confidence, addressing various topics (current affairs, culture, the environment, personal and professional experiences). They are able to express and justify opinions, make assumptions, give advice, and describe events clearly and with good lexical and grammatical mastery.
Written production: the student is able to write various types of texts (formal and informal emails, short argumentative essays, reviews, reports) in a coherent and cohesive manner. They are able to argue their point of view, rework information and narrate experiences with sufficient linguistic precision and lexical variety.
Listening comprehension: the student understands more complex spoken messages at normal speed. They can follow interviews, radio broadcasts, informative videos and conversations of general interest.
Reading comprehension: the student understands longer and more complex written texts such as newspaper articles, short stories, reviews, letters and short essays. They are able to grasp more nuances and details in addition to the general meaning of the text, even when unfamiliar vocabulary is present.

Teaching methods
Although it includes explanations aimed at learning and deepening understanding of the syntax, spelling and phonetics of European Portuguese, the course is based on practical exercises and requires student participation. In particular, interactive activities such as debates, mock job interviews and role-playing games are designed to stimulate direct student involvement. During the lessons, in addition to the textbook indicated in the bibliography, audio files, videos, and various types of texts such as newspaper articles, prose excerpts, podcasts, music tracks, and comics will be used. Students may be asked to give presentations and work in groups on topics related to the Portuguese-speaking world in order to assess their fluency, overall and detailed comprehension, and linguistic autonomy.
Assessment methods
The Practical language classes exam is divided into two parts, a written test and an oral test. The written test is preparatory to the oral test, which can be accessed by obtaining a minimum grade of 18/30 in the first test. The Practical exam is therefore divided as follows:
Written test: this consists of an assessment of the knowledge acquired by the student in the following areas: oral comprehension (listening); text comprehension; grammar exercises; composition of a short text; translation. The test lasts 3 hours. The use of a dictionary is not permitted.
Oral test: consists of a dialogue with the teacher, in Portuguese, aimed at assessing the student's interactive skills in terms of vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation, and will focus on everyday topics and topics covered in class.
The final grade is calculated as the mathematical average of the written and oral tests. This result will then be added to a third grade, which is the grade obtained in the exam with the teacher responsible for the Linguistics lectures. The final grade in Portuguese and Brazilian Linguistics and Language 2 will be calculated as the average of the three tests.
Students are free to choose whether to take the Linguistics 2 exam or the Exercises 2 exam first, provided that the prerequisite between the written and oral parts of the Exercises exams is respected.
As regards the written Practical language classes exam, there will be partial exams for students attending the first and second semesters (both generally towards the end of the semesters) on dates that will be communicated during the course. Please inform the lecturer of your intention to take the partial exams within the deadlines that will be indicated.
Students who do not take the partial exams can take the full exams on the dates scheduled for the 2025/2026 academic year: summer, autumn and winter sessions. For the practical exam, each session generally includes one date for the written exam and two dates for the oral exam.
Teaching tools
In addition to the bibliography provided, the lecturer will supply the necessary study materials, such as PowerPoint presentations, exercises, texts, audio files, etc. These materials will be made available through the Unibo Virtuale platform. Students are invited to register for the course through the platform in order to access the content that will be uploaded.
