Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, students have a knowledge (in terms of morphology, syntax and vocabulary) of French corresponding to level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Foreign Languages.

Course contents

The course, which will be held entirely in French, is open

- to students of the CLE curriculum in the CDS in Lettere (compulsory for double degree students, optional for others), to students of the CDS SPOSI or SVIC, and as an option for students from non-CLE Literature and other CDS programmes:

CLE double degree students must attend the entire course (60 hours, 12 credits, from 10 February to 21 May)

CDS SPOSI or SVIC students (currently enrolled) must attend only part of the course (30 hours, 8 credits, from 10 February to 18 March for the first group A-L; 8 April to 21 May for the second group M-Z)

Students may also choose to take only one module (6 credits, 30 hours) as an option.

Once they have taken the test, students who DO NOT have level B1 must attend a language course (held by Prof. Carole Bailleul, carole.bailleul@unibo.it - please contact her for the language course) which will take place during the first semester.

Subsequently, ALL SPOSI or SVIC students must attend (as regular or non-regular students) the monographic course (Prof. Reggiani) and the second semester language course (Bailleul).

For all students (regardless of their degree programme):

the Language and Translation course will focus on the concept of linguistic imagery in French culture. An overview of the history of the French language will be provided, emphasising the importance of certain key moments, leading up to the concept of Francophonie, with the help of narrative texts, press articles and everyday speech. Current debates on language will also be presented and discussed in light of the concept of linguistic variation.

ALL students (regardless of their degree programme), whether attending or not attending:

The study material will be available at www.virtuale.unibo.it, the University's portal for managing teaching materials.

At the beginning of the course, two different sets of texts will be provided, one for the first module and one for the second.

For the preparation of non-attending students, the following text is recommended:

Grammaire progressive du français – niveau intermédiaire (A2-B1), 4e édition, Maïa Grégoire, Odile Thievenaz, CLE international, 2017.

Please note: SPOSI students and those who have chosen to follow only one module must prepare only one dossier (the one relating to their module), while the others (12 credits) must prepare both dossiers.

Teaching methods

The course consists mainly of seminars, in which the teacher and students discuss the most appropriate linguistic and translation strategies for the context.

The corpus of texts will be provided by the teacher during the lessons.

The linguistics part will consist of lectures, with numerous authentic documents.

Please note: students enrolled in the CDS SPOSI or SVIC programme will only be required to attend 30 hours of classes, following the programme that will be shared at a later date; students enrolled in the CLE programme will be required to attend the entire 60-hour course; other students who have chosen the course as an optional course will be required to attend the entire course (12 credits) or only one of the two modules (6 credits).
