Learning outcomes
The course aims to study and analyze migration processes from an anthropological perspective. At the end of the course the student will acquire the ability to theoretically frame the migratory phenomena across the Mediterranean Sea and critically reflect on the media and political debates that surround them.
Course contents
The course aims to analyze the social, political and cultural challenges related to contemporary migrations.
After a genealogical analysis aimed at reconstructing the history of migration in the Mediterranean context, the first part of the course will focus on the main theoretical and methodological paradigms used in anthropology for the study of migratory phenomena (theories of transnationalism, post-colonial theories, theories of intersectionality, theories of multiculturalism, multi-situated ethnographies).
The second part of the course will be dedicated to the study of the multiple forms assumed by contemporary mobility. Through the presentation of various authors and case studies, the so-called economic and voluntary migrations will be analyzed. Particular attention will be paid to the study of gender relations and the articulation between productive and reproductive work in contemporary migrations.
The third part of the course will focus on forced and asylum migration within the Mediterranean area. The legal and administrative distinction between economic / voluntary migration and forced migration will be object of critical reflection. Furthermore, the analysis of national and European policies aimed at managing borders will be the background to the study of the forms of violence and the experiences of social marginalization lived by migrant people and asylum seekers.

Assessment methods
Oral exam.
The oral exam aims at evaluating the mastery, understanding and clear presentation of the contents as well as the ability of critical analysis and re-elaboration.
For attending students, active participation in seminars will also be evaluated.
Non-attending students will be evaluated only on the oral exam. The exam consists of an oral examination of the knowledge acquired from the texts indicated in the books' lists mentioned so far.
