Learning outcomes
The Laboratory of Translations aims to consolidate and refine translation skills from Latin into Italian.
The expected translation implies an intermediate level of competence in Latin, an advanced level of competence in Italian and is oriented to a specific target (translation supporting teaching Latin and scientific analysis of Latin texts).
Course contents
Addressed to the LM 15 students, the Laboratory of Translations aims to consolidate and refine translation skills from Latin into Italian. For this purpose, practical exercises will be carried out; source texts will be taken from a selection of ancient literary texts of both prose and poetry; the exercises will include some of the texts listed in the program of Latin Philology and Literature (LM 15).
Laboratory participants will acquire a translation tecnique mainly oriented to teaching and research: the expected translation will be adequate to support both the activity of teaching Latin and the scientific commentary of a Latin text.
Readings/Bibliography
Source texts will be available among the teaching materials.
Bibliographical indications will eventually be provided during the classes.
Teaching methods
Interactive methodology: students will be actively involved in the teaching process.
Assessment methods
Competence in translation will be assessed through a written translation exam.
The translation exam is passed in the presence of the following requirements:
- morphosyntactic correctness of the target text;
- adequate understanding of the source text structure;
- appropriate stylistic register to support both the activities of teaching Latin and scientific commentary.
Teaching tools
Both the texts presented in the classes and provided for home exercises will be available on IOL platform
