Learning outcomes

The course focuses on the field study of Human Geography, with particular regard to population and settlement. Students will also learn how to read a map, both contemporary and historical.

Course contents

The course is divided in three parts.

The first part consists in an introduction to Human Geography: cartography, theories, methods and key-words which characterize the discipline, with a special focus on the concepts of landscape.

The second part is dedicated to urban geography, starting from an introduction to forma urbis historical evolution, then discussing specific examples of contemporary cities in their social dimension.

In the third part, topics about political, social and economic geography are analyzed, especially focused on globalization and environmental issues.

Teaching methods

Lectures. On the first day the professor gives informations about the program, the assessment methods, the bibliography and other teaching tools that students have to analyze, also related to the following lessons and the final test.

Attending students should therefore regularly be present at the course, at least more than 80% of the lessons.

 

Assessment methods

Students of the current academic year should take the written test. The examination consists in closed-ended questions with multiple choice and open-ended questions. Different questions are provided for attending and non-attending students.

For attending students questions are related to the topics examined during the lessons, to the bibliography indicated and discussed in the course and to other teaching instruments uploaded on cloud sharing platform

For non-attending students questions are extracted from the handbook and from the other books published in bibliography.

Final evaluation will consider the accuracy of multiple choice answers, the capacity to understand and explain theories and case studies presented in the books, as well as a correct written expression and proper vocabulary.

In case of failure, students have to repeat the written test.
