Short Bio

Matteo Proto is Associate Professor in Geography at the University of Bologna. His research contributes to Historical Geography and cartography, Political Geography and socio-spatial transformations in contemporary cities. His research focuses on geographical theories related to the processes of bordering and nation-building. Other research topics are related to water studies and specifically to the historical transformations of Northern Italy waterscapes and to the critical analysis of urban regeneration. He has been the Principal Investigator of the SIR research project River Frames. He got his Ph.D. in History of Europe in 2009 at the University of Bologna. He has been a Research Fellow at the University of Bologna, at the Leibniz Institut für Länderkunde of Leipzig (Germany) and at the University of Trento. He has also collaborated in research projects or has spent reasearch periods as a visiting at the University of Verona, Innsbruck (Austria), Budapest (Hungary), Edinburgh (UK) and the Leibniz Institut für Raumbezogene Sozialforschung of Berlin (Germany).
