Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, the student has acquired deep knowledge on the principal microrganism kinds: viruses, bacteria; replication strategies; vaccines, antibiotics and resistence mechanisms.
Course contents
Bacteria: general characteristics, bacterial reproduction, spore formation. Pathogenic action of bacteria.
Laboratory diagnosis of bacterial infections.
Notes on antibacterial drugs and resistance. In vitro sensitivity tests.
Viruses: general characteristics, Pathogenic action of viruses. Laboratory diagnosis of viral infections.
Notes on antiviral drugs.
Main causative agents of septic arthritis, (N. gonorrhoeae, staphylococci, streptococci, haemophilia, enterobacteriaceae), chronic arthritis (Mycobacterium tubercolosis, Borrelia burgdorferi), reactive arthritis (salmonella, shigelle, chlamydie) and viral arthritis virus , hepatitic and alphavirus viruses).
Notes on infectious osteomyelitis.
Infections of joint prostheses and bacterial biofilms.
