Learning outcomes
The MSc student will acquire basic knowledge on zoology and biology of marine organisms and advanced knowledge and skills on the life history traits, life and reproductive cycle of marine biological resources that are of priority for fishery and acquaculture. At the end of the course, the MSc student will be able to: - describe and integrate biological data on marine animals in the framework of ecosystem sciences; - use basic and advanced knowledge for conserving and managing marine ecosystems; - use advanced knowledge and skills in applied fishery science for the monitoring and environmental-friendly management of fishery resources
Course contents
Module: Biology of fishery resources (3 CFU)
General introduction to the environmental-friendly management of fishery resources, with special focus on those of the European and Adriatic Sea.
Experimental and iconic case studies to know and to address fishery and fishery technologies to implement eco-friendly appliances and processes in fishery and to reach environmental sustainability.
Case studies
1. What makes up the fishery assemblages. The Adriatic Sea
2.0 Fish is not a fish! Species diversity and vulnerability of skates
2.1 Fish is not a fish! Long-term change in a meso-predator community in response to prolonged and heterogeneous human impact
3.0 Towards a science-based, sustainable fishery. The case of Nassarius mutabilis
3.1 Towards a science-based, sustainable fishery. Experimenting new added-value fisheries.
4.0 To fish responsibly on shared fish resources. The FAO regional program AdriaMed.
4.1 To fish responsibly on shared fish resources. The Interreg ITALY-CROATIA 2019-2021 PrizeFish: Piloting of eco-innovative fishery supply-chains to marked added-value Adtiatic fish products.
Module: Fishery Technologies (1 CFU)
Fishery technologies, fishery gears, concepts of catchability, vulnerability and seasonality of fishery resources.
Module: Laboratory of Biology of Fishery Resources (2 CFU)
