Learning outcomes

The student will learn the principal spectroscopic and chemical methods for the identification of drugs listed in Eur. Pharmacopoeia.

Course contents

1) Functional groups: physical, spectroscopic and chemical properties.
2) Methods of analysis for the identification of drugs: characters, solubility, elemental analysis, boiling point, melting point, density, refractive index, optical rotation, infrared spectrometry (IR), nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry (NMR). Spectra-structure relationship.
3) Methods of purification and separation:  distillation, extraction.
The lessons are supplied by individual practical laboratory classes with final examination
