Learning outcomes
Students will acquire knowledge of the general outlines of contemporary history, with a focus on social, cultural and political transformations. They will also obtain awareness of the complexity and problems of periodization criteria. They will acquire a good knowledge of a relevant topic of contemporary history also in relation to the historical debate and the multiplicity of sources.

On the first and on the second day of the lessons professor Gagliani will present the course contents, the program and the assessment methods. On that occasion it will be possible to ask questions and to obtain clarifications for anything that is not clear.

COURSE CONTENTS: Contemporary History: Themes and Problems
The course will focus on: the second industrial revolution (technical and scientific revolution), the new imperialism, the end of European centrality in geopolitics, Italian fascism, the First and the Second World War, Italian women during the Second World War and the Resistance.
Students will be asked to partecipate actively in the lessons (they will be asked to write a paper of about 12.000 signs on a book and to discuss it).

Teaching methods
During the lessons professor Gagliani will show, present and discuss readings and sources (written and audiovisual). Students will be asked to participate actively in the lessons (i.e. to write a paper of about 12.000 signs on a book and to discuss it).
Assessment methods
The oral exam will verify:
- the knowledge of contemporary history themes which have been discussed during the lessons
- the capability to establish connections between historical events
- the capability to periodize historical phenomena
- the capability to undertsand the readings suggested and to notice and discuss their core topics and historical questions
- the capability to compare readings.
ATTENTION - The last exam date for attending students is on February-March 2018. Afterwards they will be considered as non-attending students and will study the entire program.
Erasmus and international students (A-L): only Erasmus and international students whose surnames begin with letters from A to L and whose international tutor is a professor of the School of Arts, Humanities and Cultural Heritage can enroll in professor Gagliani's course.
Students must show up within three days from the beginning of the lessons (1st, 2nd and 3rd lesson) to enroll in the course. Otherwise they will not be admitted to the final exam.
Erasmus and international students have to study the same program as Italian students. Also assessment methods are the same.
