  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Agricultural Technology (cod. 8524)

Learning outcomes

Students will acquire knowledge on the plant diseases processes, and on the economical impact of diseases of crop worldwide. They will know the physiological effects of diseases on crops and the general molecular basis of plant pathogen interaction and resistance mechanisms. They will be able to describe the most important mechanisms of pathogen attack, and of plant defence.  Furthermore, students will know the most important sources of abiotic stress and the general physiological bases of them. Similarly they will acquire knowledge on biotic stress, such as the most important classes of pathogens: fungi, bacteria, viruses and other minor pathogens. With respect to plant protection, students will acquire essential knowledge on the principles of the different available methods of disease control.

Course contents

The course is composed by two modules:   MODULE 1 (4 CFU) 'General Plant Pathology'   Introduction to Plant Pathology: historical insights, economical losses. Diagnosis: available methods to recognize diseases. Disease cycle: Inoculum , penetration, infection, dissemination. Disease effects on the most important physiological process of plants: photosynthesis, respiration, nutrients translocation. Insights on the plant pathology genetics and molecular bases of plant : pathogen interaction. Genetics of the plant resistance to pathogens: hypersensitive response, oxydative stress, R and avr genes. methods of pathogen attack: toxins and plant detoxyfication methods. Epidemiology, insights. Biotic stresses: fungi, bacteria, viruses and minor pathogens. General features and classification. Abiotic stresses: main causes and subsequent plant physiological alterations.
MODULE 2 (2 CFU) 'Plant Protection'    Evolution of crop protection from pathogens. Defense principles: chemical, physical and biological methods. Recent laws about the use of defense methods,.
