Learning outcomes

By analysing various case studies the course provides the tools for understanding how European societies work and the transformations that changed the structure of such societies in the twentieth century, as well as the repercussions those changes had on politics. By the end of the course the student will:
-         have a thorough grasp of historical development in one or more case studies
-         be able to apply the insights gained in analysing case studies to other phenomena of the kind
-         be able to interpret changes in the structure and composition of European society
-         be able to interpret, report on, contextualise within the relevant area of debate and rationally discuss specialist essays in political and social history
-         be able to present the insights acquired during the course in broad outline as well as detail
-         be able to extend the scope of his/her expertise via methods of analysing specialist literature acquired during the course.

Course contents

Twentieth century has been considered by meny sholars as the Century of violence or of genocide. Starting from this point of view the course  has the aim to analyze the role played by violence in the development of political and social system of the XX Century.  Main focus will be on the ethnic cleansing and the genocide on one side and on the political violnce on the other The curse will be divided in  four units:

1- Historical and theoretical introduction to the problem of violence
2-  War violence against states and civilians
3- devolepment of political violence
4 . Discussion on the Concepts of ethnic cleansing and genocide

The course will be organized as a seminar

Teaching methods

Lectures will introduce students to the different topics During the seminar students will discuss readings and analyze some case-studies.

Assessment methods

Students attending the class
Class Participation and oral presentation of one subject proposed by teacher (20%),
Essay on this subject (at least 3000 words) (50%)
Oral examination (30%): discussion on the essay's content and on course's subjects

deadline for essay's delivery:   13th January 2014 (further information on the essay will be given during the course)
