Learning outcomes

The student will have basic knowledge of animal taxonomy, systematics, reproduction and diversity with special emphasis to those of veterinary and zootechnical interest. Among them special focus will be given to some invertebrate phyla (Molluscs, Arthropods) and to Vertebrates. In addition, the student will acquire abilities in the identification of animal groups of veterinary interest.

Course contents

GENERAL ZOOLOGY - The animal Kingdom. Classification of Animals: tasxonomy, methods and purpose, species and higher groups. Nomenclature: common names and scientific names. Animal reproduction: asexual and sexual reproduction, mitosis and meiosis, spermatogenesis, oogenesis, fertilization. Special types of sexual reproduction: parthenogenesis and hermafroditism.

SYSTEMATIC ZOOLOGY - Structure and natural history of Chordates: Urochordata, Cephalochordata and Vertebrata. Characteristics, external features, integument, skeleton, locomotion, feeding, respiratory system, excretory system, nervous system and sense organs, reproduction and development, relation to man of the following taxa with particular reference to Italian fauna: Cyclostomata, Chondrichthyes, Osteichthyes (Acipenseriformes, Clupeiformes, Salmoniformes, Cypriniformes, Siluriformes, Anguilliformes, Gadiformes, Lophiiformes, Perciformes, Scorpaeniformes, Pleuronectiformes), Amphibia (Caudata and Anura), Reptilia (Chelonia and Squamata), Aves (Ciconiiformes, Charadriiformes, Anseriformes, Falconiformes, Columbiformes, Galliformes, Strigiformes, Passeriformes), Mammalia (Prototheria, Metatheria, Eutheria: Insectivora, Chiroptera, Rodentia, Lagomorpha, Carnivora, Artiodactyla, Cetacea). Invertebrates: basic knowledge on Mollusca and Arthropod.

Lectures, lab practices and teaching visits to museums and wild parks.

 

Assessment methods

Two written multiple-choice tests (General Zoology and Systematic Zoology) with 20 queries each.

Powerpoint illustration, lab exercises, teaching at the museums of Comparative Anatomy and Zoology and on the field.
