Learning outcomes

The students will obtain knowledge of the general themes and issues of the modern age (from the second half of the fifteenth century to the beginning of the nineteenth century), as well as a particular knowledge of both the theme confronted in the specialized (monographic) course and its relative sources.

As the lessons will explicitly address the issues of historical method and historical knowledge, students will also be able to recognize the complexity and problematic nature of every historical “construction.”

Time and place of lessons: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday; 13:00-15:00. Aula I, Via Zamboni 38.

Part I (Period I:October 1, 2012 –November 7,2012)

The lessons in part 1 are aimed for students who will take the Modern History exam for12 credits.

1 . Themes and problems of the history of the modern age, from the second half of the fifteenth century until the age of Napoleon (with projections of maps from historical atlases) with a focus on the history of the Italian states before the Unification of Italy.

Part II (I SemesterII Period: November 12,2012 -December 19,2012).

The lessons in Part II are aimed for those students who will take the Modern History exam for12 credits as well as for those students who will take the Modern History exam for6 credits.

Specialized (monographic) course: Italy in war. Experiences, discourses, representations 1494-1559 .

In recent times the continuous current of contemporary wars in general has called for a revival of attention to the theme of war between medieval and early modern period, particularly in the modern age historiography, the events and problems of "wars horrende 'd' Italy.During the lectures will address both the then current conceptions on the legitimacy of the war (the talk about "just war"), and the various modes of narrative experiences of some of the many wars fought. Particular attention will be devoted to reflections of Machiavelli and Francesco Guicciardini. But experiences of war and speeches will be followed through the analysis of "scriptures" are often considered minor: Chronicles, first, and then - among others - that extraordinary testimony that it was the "wars in eighth rhyme".
