27770 - Laboratory of Polymer Science L (A-L)

Academic Year 2011/2012

  • Teaching Mode: In-person learning (entirely or partially)
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Industrial Chemistry (cod. 0882)

Learning outcomes

The course is aimed to describe the macromolecular chemistry from the point of view of the synthesis and characterization of polymers. Practical experiments introduce some methods of synthesis such as, for example, radical polymerization in emulsion, interfacial polymerization, polycondensation in solution and in the bulk.

Course contents

Emulsion polymerization of styrene; determination of the molecular mass and polydispersity by gel permeation chromatography (GPC).

Preparation of nylon 6-10 from sebacoyl chloride and hexamethylenediamine by interfacial polymerization.

Preparation of thermosetting resins from phenol or resorcinol and formaldehyde or glutaraldehyde.

Preparation of strong cationic exchange resins by sulphonation of styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer; determination of sulphonation degree and ionic exchange activity.

Structural analysis of the polymers prepared in laboratory by means of FTIR spectroscopy.

Teaching methods

In the initial phase of the course some lessons will provide the necessary basic knowledges for the practical execution of operations that afterwards will be made in the laboratory. In the final phase some exercises will be carried out to evaluate and discuss the results achieved in the experimental tests.

Teaching tools

Videoprojector. Laboratory of synthesis and instrumental analysis. Printed copies of presented topics are available to the students.
