27212 - General Physics 1

Academic Year 2011/2012

  • Docente: Paolo Capiluppi
  • Credits: 15
  • SSD: FIS/01
  • Language: Italian
  • Teaching Mode: In-person learning (entirely or partially)
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Physics (cod. 8007)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student will acquire the basic knowledge of the Newtonian mechanics, with its basilar applications. She/he will also acquire basic knowledge of the thermodynamics equilibrium processes, of restricted relativity (including the relativistic reformulation of Newtonian cinematic and dynamic). Particularly, the student will be able to utilize the general concepts and laws of classical mechanic and equilibrium thermodynamic. In addition, the student will be able to treat simple applications of relativistic cinematic and dynamic.

Course contents

Newtonian Mechanics:

Space, Time, Motion. Forces in equilibrium. Newton's laws of Motion. Reference Frames. Conservative forces and energy. Gravitation. Dynamics of rigid bodies. Elasticity. Fluidodynamics.

Thermodynamics:

Heat and temperature. Ideal and real gases. The laws of thermodynamics. Internal energy. Entropy. Elements of kinetic theory of gases.

Special Relativity:

Principle of relativity. Lorentz transformations. Space contraction and time dilatation. Relativistic dynamics, momentum and  energy.
