Pathogenetic mechanisms at the origin of optic glaucomatous neuropathy and its therapy

Course contents

Anatomy and physiology of head of the optic nerve. Mechanical theory of optic glaucomatous neuropathy. Vascular theory of optic glaucomatous neuropathy. Apoptosis. Diagnostic exams of optic glaucomatous neuropathy. Hypotensivedrugs. Laser treatment of ocular hypertension. Neuroprotection.

Assessment methods

At the end of the course will be made an oral examination with some questions regarding the topics covered in class.

Teaching tools

Video, PC, overhead projector. Attendance at the Glaucoma Service of the U:O: Ophthalmology/Campos for the discussion of clinical cases.
