Learning outcomes
Acquisition of knowledge on gross and microscopic features of conditions which may affect laboratory animals, as for specific lesions in organ systems, and their pathogenesis. Acquisition of knowledge on morphophisiopathology of animal models of human disease, particularly of immunological and vascular diseases and shock. Ability to properly recognize and describe a lesion with appropriate terminology, and to evaluate similarities and differences among interpecies models of diseases.
Course contents
PATHOLOGY OF LABORATORY ANIMALS (3 CREDITS - BETTINI)
Recognize and interpret conditions which may affect experimental results or alter the health of laboratory animals.
The major objective of this course is to review the pathology and, where appropriate, the etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and control of infectious, parasitic, neoplastic, iatrogenic, nutritional, and metabolic diseases of laboratory animals.
Necropsy Techniques of laboratory animals. Sampling and processing techniques for histopathology. Pathology of respiratory, digestive, hemolymphatic, urinary, genital, nervous, muscoskeletal and cutaneous system of laboratory animals.
ANIMAL MODELS OF HUMAN DISEASES (2 CREDITS - SARLI)
Acquisition of knowledge on the pathogenesis of human and animal models of disease.
Acquisition of knowledge on the pathogenesis of human and animal models of disease due to immunopathologic or circulation deficit mechanisms. Animal and human models of disease caused by hypersensivity (types I, II, III, IV); immunodeficiency, autoimmune diseases, graft rejection. Animal and human models of shock, oedema, haemorragic diseases, thrombosis, ischemia, embolism.
