Learning outcomes

The course is aimed to give knowledge of: 1) vertebrates classification with particular reference to the italian mammals; 2) distribution and abundance of italian mammals and birds; 3) ecology and management of birds and mammals.

Course contents

Classification of Animals: methods and purpose, species and higher groups. Nomenclature: common names and scientific names. Vertebrate Zoology: Cyclostomata, Chondrichthyes, Osteichthyes (Acipenseriformes, Clupeiformes, Salmoniformes, Cypriniformes, Siluriformes, Anguilliformes, Perciformes), Amphibia (Caudata and Anura), Reptilia (Chelonia and Squamata), Aves (Ciconiiformes, Charadriiformes, Anseriformes, Falconiformes, Columbiformes, Galliformes, Strigiformes, Passeriformes), Mammalia (Prototheria, Metatheria, Eutheria: Insectivora, Chiroptera, Rodentia, Lagomorpha, Carnivora, Artiodactyla, Cetacea).

Italian fauna. Wild, domestic and wild again animals. Extinction and red list. Small and isolated populations. Populations conservation in protected areas. Fauna control. Mountains and wood fauna. Farmland fauna. Aquatic fauna. Urban fauna. Marine and coast fauna. Faunal technician.
