Course contents
Between music, zen and manga
Starting from the artistic phenomena which took place after Second World War, this course explores the so-called “death of art”, focusing on the abandonment of aesthetic strategies concerned with traditional medias (painting, sculpture and so on). Therefore, the extra-pictorial researches as stated in the title of the course will examine the poetics of the object, happening and performance. Inside the course, aspects of contemporary art will be analyzed by enlarging the investigation to the history of rock music, of music videos, with a particular focus on Japanese art and its double face of “zen” and “manga” style. Besides Yayoi Kusama and Yoko Ono, the course will point the attention on Japanese Neopop (Kenji Yanobe, Takashi Murakami, Yoshitomo Nara and Mariko Mori), up to the environments of the so-called Biopop. Cult products such as Takashi Okazaki's Afro Samurai will also be analyzed together with the main lines of other young international artists.
