Learning outcomes

The course will concur to acquire competences in the field of product manufacturing as far as in manufacturing engineering as in the acquaintance of the main metal-mechanic processes.

Course contents

Manufacturing Study: Definition, objectives, developing procedures.

Production Systems: Systems characterization to correctly apply the more suitable technological process.

The product to be manufactured: The elements to analyze for the product definition

The worked surface quality: dimensional and geometrical precision; tolerances criteria, micro and macro errors measurement.

The graphical representation of the product: the different technical drawings utilized; the manufacturing drawings.

Materials: Materials classification and characterization. Physical, chemical, mechanical and technological properties of materials. The mechanical tests of material. Steels and heat treatments. Cast irons, copper alloys, aluminium alloys.

Technological processes for manufacturing: Processes classification,process selection criteria automated process selection. 

Primary Forming processes: Powder metallurgy. Metal Casting; Casting processes by expendable moulds: sand casting, shell moulding, investment casting; Casting processes by means of permanent moulds: hard mould casting, die casting, centrifugal casting, and continuous casting. Casting practice. Casting shrinkages and dimensional precision of casting parts. Casting parts inspection.

Deforming Processes and machines:rolling, extrusion, drawing, forging.

Removal processes and machines:  Mechanics of chip formation, the working movements, cutting tool geometry, cutting forces, stresses and power, temperature in cutting, tool wear and failure.

Machine tools classification, structures and components. Machine tools conventional and CNC,

The main removal processes: turning, drilling, boring, milling, grinding.

Manufacturing Process Planning: Aims and development criteria and procedure. The routing sheet. Time calculation.
