Learning outcomes

Students gain knowledge on herbaceous crops charateristics and are able to critically analyze cropping systems on agricultural point of view.

Course contents

Prerequisites: Basic biology and agronomy.

Frontal lessons (40 hours): distribution ad importance of major field crops. Cereals, leguminous, oil, sugar, textile, aromatic, and bioenergy/biofuels crops. Forage crops. Each crop is described on the basis of its importance, morpho-physiological traits, environmental requirements, biological cycle, crop management, quantitative and qualitative traits for different end-uses.

Exercizes (20 hours): analysis of seeds and plant material for the identification of individual species. Periodical visits at the Departmental Agricultural Garden and University farms.

Knowledge gain: student can critically analyze cropping systems, and identify the major herbaceous crops over different growth stages.
