Abstract
Worldwide, rice is the most widely consumed staple food for more than half of the human population, providing about 1/5 of the daily calories consumed. Rice blast, caused by the fungus Pyricularia oryzae, is the most important disease affecting rice and is estimated to destroy enough rice to feed 60 million people each year, causing a significant and urgent economic and humanitarian problem. The main outcome of the INFIRE project is the identification of a new class of chemical entities capable of inhibiting the process from a (bio)chemical point of view and, as a consequence, the virulence of the pathogen. To achieve this goal, natural and dual-acting hybrid compounds will be investigated.
