Expanding the toolbox for cereal breeding: high-throughput genomics, 2D-3D phenomics and artificial intelligence for breeding with increasing genome complexity, from barley to durum and bread wheat (POLYPLOIDBREEDING 4.0)

PRIN 2022 Frascaroli

Abstract

POLYPLOIDBREEDING 4.0 will focus on key technologies as high throughput phenotyping and genotyping in diploid (barley) and polyploid (durum and common wheat) crop species for artificial intelligence based breeding. The objec-tive is to develop and apply new methods for the benefit of crop breeding. Specific objectives are 1) data genera-tion: new data from drone- and rhizotron-captured phenotypes, sequence data integrate new and exist-ing/historical data; 2) modeling and tool development for data integration, for the acquisition and processing of high-throughput phenomics and for AI-based genomic predictions; 3) calibration of the main results through ad-hoc experiments in-silico to expand the toolbox available for cereal breeding.
