Cover Letter: things to avoid

After highlighting the importance of a cover letter and reading some tips on what it should always include, let’s now see what you should avoid and look at the most common mistakes.

It is worth mentioning, once again, the importance of proofreading your cover letter and making sure that:

there are no grammatical, syntactic and orthographic errors – the letter must be linear and easy to read (make sure you use the appropriate verb tenses);

there are no typos and punctuation errors;

you have not left out personal details, information about the Company, the address, the date;

you always use the first person;

you give your consent for the processing of personal data (Legislative Decree 196/2003): even if provided in your Curriculum, it is always worth mentioning.

You should avoid sentences such as: “Being a part of your company is one of my greatest professional aspirations” or “I wish to grow professionally in your Company, leader in the market ...”. If the Company leads a specific sector, it does not need confirmation from you; on the other hand, if it does not, it will sound like sheer adulation.

Presenting yourself and your professional goals is the main objective of the letter, but you must make sure you are not repetitive (for example, in the choice of adjectives used to describe your skills and competences). The subject of the cover letter is important and must be concise, clear, and contain no superfluous terms; however, “Application” or “Application for... Name of Position” is better than “My CV”.

Finally, it is important that your letter does not sound trite. A candidate that sounds superficial, materialistic or as if they lack motivation, will not draw the recruiter’s attention. The best approach is to show that you would like to be given the opportunity and that if you are, you will give it your all.

The objective of a cover letter is to explain that you deserve the opportunity and that you have strong reasons to believe in the Company, because that job offer may well be your perfect chance.
