Information on the processing of personal data

The Alma Mater Studiorum - University of Bologna intends to carry out a research project entitled: PISTS (Partecipazione Interprete Simultaneista Talk Show) "The participation of the simultaneous interpreter in the talk show: Multimodal conversational analysis of translated television interviews" which, through the acquisition of audio/video recordings from third parties, aims to build corpora of television interviews (i.e. databases comprising audio/video recordings of television interviews and related transcripts) in order to analyse with the methodology of multimodal conversation analysis and data mining the interpreter's participation in the interactional dynamics of television interviews. The creation and analysis of the corpora will be carried out in the Department of Interpretating and Translation - DIT of the University of Bologna, Forlì Campus.

Purposes and methods of processing

The personal data of the data subjects, in particular, name, surname, voice and images, data relating to location, data disclosing racial or ethnic origin, political opinions, religious or philosophical beliefs, trade union membership, data relating to the person's sexual life/orientation, only where already publicly disclosed by the data subjects, i.e. hosts, interpreters and guests (public figures of the national and international artistic, cultural and political scene) in the interviews of the Italian talk show Che tempo che fa and possibly of other European talk shows such as Quotidien, which are freely accessible online on the talk shows websites (e.g. Rai. tv, RaiPlay and Nove.tv and tf1.fr), will be processed by specifically authorised persons, with and without the use of automated equipment.
The data processing is aimed at creating corpora of translated television interviews (consisting of the audio/video recordings of talk show interviews and their transcripts), which will be analysed with multimodal conversation analysis and data mining in this research being conducted at the Department of Interpreting and Translation - DIT of the University of Bologna, Forlì Campus. The research at hand is aimed at analysing how the verbal and non-verbal communication of hosts and guests and the verbal behaviour of interpreters make the latter full participants of the interpreted television interviews.

(A) Participation in the research and related operations and activities

In the study, personal data of the data subjects will be collected through:

  • downloading the interviews (audio/video recordings) and storing them on University devices;
  • cataloguing the interviews in a database accessible to supervisor and co-supervisor on OneDrive (server of the University of Bologna). The data, in particular the names and surnames of interviews' hosts, interpreters and guests (public figures of the national and international artistic, cultural and political scene) will be used to name and catalogue the interviews in the database;

  • multimodal conversation analysis of excerpts from the transcribed interviews;
  • data mining, i.e. an automated technique aimed at analysing large quantities of interpreted interviews with international guests from the Italian talk show Che tempo che fa and other European talk shows such as Quotidien, in order to identify phenomena and trends in the interactional dynamics of interpreted interactions;
  • possible interviews with the interpreters and hosts of the talk shows;

The data collected for the purposes of this research will be stored for 10 years and deposited on IRIS (Institutional Research Information System) - a platform used by the University of Bologna to manage and collect data related to research activities and outputs.

Personal data could be communicated to third parties who, in their capacity as Data Processors pursuant to art. 28 of Regulation (EU) 2016/679, assist the data controller in managing its information systems and services.

The processing and analysis of the data in this research will be based on audio-video recordings of the interviews of the Italian talk show Che tempo che fa and of other European talk shows such as Quotidien, in which the data subjects took part and which are freely accessible online on the talk shows' websites. The processing of the images (captured from the recordings of the downloaded interviews) will be carried out in compliance with provisions of the law. However, no procedures will be adopted for not directly identifying or for anonymising data, insofar as these data have already been disclosed by the persons concerned in the interviews.

(A1) Information concerning the dissemination

The data described above, exclusively where already disclosed by the data subjects in the television interviews freely accessible online on the websites of the Italian talk show Che tempo che fa and of other European talk shows such as Quotidien, may be disseminated/published, e.g. through scientific publications, also online, conventions, seminars, conferences, and deposited on IRIS (Institutional Research Information System) - a platform used by the University of Bologna to manage and collect data related to research activities and outputs.

Legal basis and nature of the provision of data

The legal basis for such processing is found in Article 6, first paragraph, point e) (processing carried out in the public interest) of Regulation (EU) 2016/679 and, in the case of special categories of personal data, of art. 9, second paragraph, point e) (processing relates to personal data which are manifestly made public by the data subject) of Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (General Data Protection Regulation).

The data collected by the University is considered necessary for the achievement of the purposes, without prejudice to the data subject's right to object to data processing at any time by contacting the University using the details provided.

Rights of the data subject

Without prejudice to the limitations placed on exercise of the rights of data subjects by arts. 2-undecies and 2-duodecies of the Data Protection Code (Decree 196/03), the data subject, may exercise the rights granted pursuant and consequent to arts. 15-21 of the Regulation, including the right to request access to his/her personal data and its rectification or erasure, as well as to restrict the processing of the data, object to its processing and request its portability.

Lastly, should the data subject believe that the processing of his/her personal data is in infringement of the provisions of Regulation (EU) 2016/679 or Decree 196/03 and subsequent amendments and additions, the data subject has the right to lodge a complaint with the Italian data protection authority (known as the "Garante per la protezione dei dati personali"), pursuant to Article 77of the Regulation (UE) 2016/679, or to refer to the appropriate courts (art. 79 of the Regulation).
