Research topics

The topics of research refer to the two main research areas: Pedagogic-historic and Didactic-experimental. In detail, the research themes addressed during the first year, through lectures, workshops and seminars, are:

  • General and Social Pedagogy, including: philosophy of education, pedagogy of families, intercultural education, adult education
  • History of pedagogy, which includes: school history, history of education, history of the theories of childhood, the story of the imaginary child, and children's literature
  • Special Education, which includes: teaching and learning methodologies, inclusive education, special educational needs, education technologies and e-learning
  • Experimental Pedagogy, which includes: theories and strategies for designing and evaluate educational interventions, the methodology of empirical research in education

The research topics also include any correlations between the pedagogical and psychological area.

Job opportunities and potential areas of employment
The career opportunities for PhDs from the Pedagogical Sciences PhD programme are notably linked to the knowledge and competencies developed in pedagogic-didactic research areas during the programme. In particular, PhDs will be able to:
- Apply for/participate in research programmes run by public or private institutions (university research centres, the national health services, the Regional Institutes for Educational Research, foundations, study centres)
- Access management positions in the education sector
- Lead market research and other projects for companies supplying education and training products and services (publishing on school's and children, creation and production of educational software, video games for children and adolescents and the whole edutainment sector, technologies and aids for the disabled)
- Manage and organise documentation centres, libraries, archives and museum poles in the educational and children's sectors for public and private bodies (foundations, associations, cooperatives, publishing companies)
- Work in the public administration in sectors that require surveys and research on educational/social/training needs for the local community in order to appropriately design interventions
- Carry out pedagogical counseling and design of distance courses (e-learning)

Learning outcomes
The PhD programme in Pedagogical Sciences has two separate main research areas: a pedagogic-historic programme and a didactic-experimental programme. For both curricula the possibility to attend a pathway focused on the interactions between pedagogical and psychological knowledge on theoretical and methodological issues specific of each research area is provided, including comparisons at epistemological and practical level, in particular in the definition of services and complex interventions. Alongside the learning outcomes which are common to both curricula, each programme also has specific learning outcomes.
Activities to be carried out by Doctoral candidates
- Field research in the main educational contexts (i.e. formal, informal and non formal)
- Development of educational projects in simulated contexts (education workshops)
- Participation in research-action projects and bibliographic and theoretical-comparative research
Research training activities compliant with the Doctoral programme's learning outcomes
- Lectures covering a study programme focusing on the 4 fields of interest of the PhD programme, which correspond to the subject areas of the two curricula
- Attendance of seminars delivered mainly by foreign professors who are experts in the subjects covered by the PhD programme, including seminars run by the Scuola Superiore di Studi Umanistici (Advanced School of Humanities) of the University of Bologna
- Participation in cycles of lessons at other national and international universities
- Participation in educational and learning projects
- Direct knowledge of innovative, leading education experiences in the national and international, and particularly European field
Internationalization features
PhD candidates in Pedagogical Science (particularly those with scholarships) are required to spend at least three months abroad at a university or research centre that is particularly relevant in the field of educational research. Candidates are also stimulated to take part in international research projects and to establish agreements with European and non-European research centres and educational institutions under the supervision of the supervisor. For each of the two curricula, every year the PhD programme invites a number of foreign lecturers/researchers who particularly distinguished themselves in the pedagogical and didactic field. Further elements of internationalisation are:
- Opportunity for candidates to receive support in the production of their thesis also by tutors from European Universities;
- The opportunity to carry out joint research activities with foreign universities;
- Presence of foreign professors in the Academic Board (University of Salamanca - University of Sibiu - University of Valencia - University of Vienna - University of California - University of Laguna);
- Agreement with Universidade Federal do Paranà and University of Granada;
- Two foreign PhD candidates in the 34° cycle (quote 30% on the total number of candidates enrolled) and one in the 35° cycle; one in the 36° cycle with the China Scholarship Council; one with the agreement with UNICAMP in the 36° cycle.
Expected research results and products
The expected products and learning outcomes during the programme include:
- Reviews (at least 2 for each candidate, during the first year)
- Scientific articles published in national and international journals (at least 3 for each candidate)
- presentation of results of (also ongoing) research projects at national and international conferences
At the end of the PhD programme, the learning outcome consists of the publication of the PhD thesis.
