Suspending your studies

Suspension of studies refers the possibility to interrupt your studies for a given period.

The instructions given do not apply to students enrolled in medical or non-medical specialisation schools, who should refer to their own respective regulations.

During the suspension you are not allowed to carry out any activity under your career, such as sit exams, modify or present a study plan, request the recognition of learning activities, study abroad under the Erasmus programme, or graduate.

Cases in which suspension must be requested

The current regulations do not allow you to be enrolled in two Degree Programmes at the same time, so you must request the suspension from studies from the programme you are enrolled in in the following cases:

  • enrollment in a specialisation school;
  • enrollment in a PhD programme;
  • courses listed in DM 249/2010;
  • enrollment in a I or II level professional master's degree programme;
  • if you are a holder of a Research grant provided by University.

Moreover, under the new Student Regulation of the University of Bologna you are able to request the suspension from studies in the following cases:

  • if you intend to enrol in an Italian military training institute (also working under agreements with public universities) until you have completed the relative programmes;
  • if you are inducted into mandatory military service for the whole academic year in which the service is carried out;
  • if you intend to sign up for a period of civil service for the whole academic year in which the service is carried out;
  • if you intend to sign up for a period of European Voluntary Service for the whole academic year in which the service is carried out;
  • if you intend to enrol in degree programmes of Higher Education in Art, Music and Dance (AFAM) except Music Conservatories, for the duration of the degrees;
  • if you are about to become a parent you can request suspension for the academic year of or following the date of birth;
  • if you have a serious illness of no less than 6 months, confirmed by a medical certificate, you can request a suspension from your studies for the whole duration of the illness; the suspension will be granted for the relevant academic year(s), for a period of not more than the normal duration of the programme;
  • if a close family member has a serious illness, supported by a medical certification, of a total duration of not less than 6 months, for which you have an obligation of care, and for a period of not more than the normal duration of the programme);
  • if your family unit’s economic and financial situation has seriously changed, following dismissal, redundancy or other company crisis, supported by appropriate certification, for a period of not more than the normal duration of the programme;
  • if you are imprisoned or under house arrest, for a period of not more than the normal duration of the programme.

Other cases of suspension for the purposes of continuing studies abroad are governed by specific agreements between the participating universities.

How to suspend your studies

If you intend to suspend your studies:

  1. go to Studenti Online and complete online the application form for suspension from studies, sign it and apply a 16 EUR duty stamp;
  2. hand deliver to the Student Administration Office of your Degree Programme the above-mentioned form and the supporting documents. If an official certificate is not expressly required, you can fill in a self-certification form [.pdf].

How to resume your studies after a period of suspension

If you intend to return to studies:

  1. go to Studenti Online on the detail of  the suspension practice  and click on Resume your studies; if you have submitted a suspension application before activating the online procedure, you have to contact your Student Administration Office;
  2. send an e-mail to the Student Administration Office of your Degree Programme and ask them to upload onto Studenti Online a code for the payment of any tuition fees that are still outstanding for the academic years prior to your suspension.
    You do not have to pay the recognition fees, the lump-sum paid in lieu of the whole tuition fees for the past years, but you must pay the whole tuition fee for the year in which you resume your studies and therefore restart your career;
  3. pay the fees due as described in the above point as soon as you receive your code:
    - at any branch of UniCredit Banca presenting a copy of your code;
    - you may also pay online by credit card, even if it is not issued to your name, on Studenti Online.
