Admission requirements and assessment of previously acquired knowledge/competences

In order to follow fruitfully the second-cycle Master degree programme in Physics of the Earth System students must possess appropriate preliminary understanding of mathematics and physics, (especially basic mathematics and chemistry, mathematics-related disciplines, classical physics, quantum mechanics and elements of microphysics, as well as laboratory activities).
To join the Master programme the applicant also needs the following curricular requisites:
to possess a degree in one of the following classes or another qualification gained abroad and recognised as appropriate:
- ex D.M. 270: all Degrees of Class L-30
- ex. D.M. 509/99: Three-year Degree class XXV – Physical Science and Technology.
- Previous four-year system: Degree in Physics, Degree in Astronomy.
Failing possession of the degree and/or the credits mentioned above, admission to the Master's degree programme is conditional on the student possessing the necessary knowledge as ascertained by a special Committee perusing the CV and conducting an interview according to criteria and a procedure set by the Degree Programme Board and posted on the University Portal.
Apart from possessing the mentioned curricular requirements, applicants may only join the Master's degree programme if they can demonstrate enough personal background knowledge. This is ascertained from examination of their CV, followed possibly by an interview, the details and procedures of which will be established by the Degree Programme Board and made known via the University Portal.
When joining the programme, students will be tested on their proficiency in English. They may be required to make up for an initial deficiency if the test shows they are below level B1.
The second-cycle degree programme may arrange a special session for international students and appoint a Committee to check the suitability of their background knowledge, if the deadline of the Call for study grant allocation (in May, typically) allows time.
If international students have been positively evaluated under the foregoing point, they are exempt from the next step foreseen for the majority of students, viz. a test of their personal knowledge.

Programme profile

The Master degree in Physics of the Earth System trains graduates with a solid grounding in physics and mathematics, a specific advanced knowledge in dynamics of continuum media (fluids, elastic and visco-elastic solids, multi-phase systems) in relation to physical phenomena affecting the Earth System. The range of subjects taught is wide, enabling students to gain an overall perspective by studying major phenomena stemming from the interaction between the atmosphere, hydrosphere and solid Earth, or else opt for more specific training in fluid Earth or solid Earth physics.
The programme is completed by upgrading the level of English to level B2. This may involve both practice in the four language skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking) and compulsory attendance of lessons. The criteria will be announced as the degree programme unfolds, according with the norms set by the Academic Bodies.
The teaching program attaches special importance to the preparation of the dissertation, during which advanced know-how is acquired, above all by individual study and participation in group research projects and/or laboratory work, possibly out-of-house. A student with a special bent for theory may focus the dissertation on searching for original solutions to integral and differential equations pertaining to geophysics.
One important focus is to prepare students to pursue PhDs courses in related subject areas, enabling them to enter research activities at university, research institutes or in industry.
Given the range of experimental and theoretical subjects covered and the scientific and methodological depth attained, graduates will have broad scope for finding jobs in industry, the service sector, scientific dissemination and middle/high school teaching (for this graduates will have to qualify as teachers and pass the selection processes ordained by current law).
