Admission requirements and assessment of previously acquired knowledge/competences

1.1. Curricular requirements

To profitably attend the 2nd cycle degree programme in Safety and Quality in Animal Production, applicants must have previous knowledge of Biology, Biochemistry, Animal Production, Food Science and Principles of Economics.

Admission to the 2nd cycle degree programme is also subject to the possession of the following curricular requirements:

1. A 1st cycle degree in one of the following classes, or other suitable qualification obtained abroad:

2. At least 58 CFU credits in one or more of the following subject areas (SSD):

30 CFU in SSD in the AGR group;

20 CFU in SSD in the VET group;

8 CFU in SSD in the BIO group.

If the above curricular requirements (degree certificate and/or above-mentioned credits) are not met, admission to the 2nd Cycle Degree Programme is subject to a preliminary assessment by a Board to ascertain the required skills and competencies through an interview.

The Board, appointed by the Degree Programme Board, will establish a calendar for the interviews, which will be published on the degree programme website.

If the Board considers the level of the candidates' knowledge and skills to be satisfactory, they will be allowed to enrol in a test to assess their personal competencies and skills.

1.2 Assessment of language skills

Admission to the degree programme is subject to the assessment of knowledge and skills in the English language, to level B1 by the University Linguistic Centre.

Students holding a corresponding language certification may be exempted from sitting this exam.

The Degree Programme may require students to recover any initial deficit in the event of them being assessed to below level B1 on admission.

1.3 Assessment of personal competencies and skills

Admission to the 2nd Cycle Degree Programme is subject to the possession of the prescribed curricular requirements and the assessment of personal competencies and skills, which will be deemed to be passed by candidates holding a final degree score of at least 77/110.

Second Cycle Degree Programmes may include a specific session for international students, appointing a Board to assess personal competences and skills, compatibly with the schedule laid down in the call for applications for study grants (the deadline of which is indicatively in May).

International students who pass the above-mentioned assessment are exempted from the following assessment of their personal competencies and skills required for other students.

Programme profile

The degree programme in Safety and Quality in Animal Production aims to train professionals working in all aspects of animal production, including technical, Public health and economic management of agro-zootechnical companies, as well as the technical skills and services for businesses operating in the transformation and marketing of products of animal origin, also working as freelance Agronomists (professional figure recognised at European level). The degree programme trains technical professionals able to draft and manage projects and proposals, considering the resources of the business system they work in.

The curriculum is structured in two areas of knowledge:

ANIMAL PRODUCTION This knowledge allows graduates to identify the critical points of the supply chain, applying knowledge of animal welfare and genetic improvement to improve the efficiency and quality of productions, monitoring and preventing transmissible diseases in pets and domestic animals.

AGRO-INDUSTRIES This knowledge allows graduates to perform quality control, technological design and improvement of production processes to obtain safe products for consumers;

The ability to apply knowledge and understanding is achieved through lectures and a significant amount of practical training (visits to farms, laboratory activities, curricular internship).

The teaching methods focus on the learning of practical activities, based on experience and joint work performed between teachers, students and tutors. The programme therefore includes learning experiences at breeding farms as well as multi-purpose instrumental laboratories aiming to gain practical experience of nutrition and food techniques, microbiology and parasitology, Food safety and inspection, the qualitative and organoleptic assessment of foodstuffs.

The overall aim is for students not only to gain knowledge but also "know-how". Training may also be integrated by the attendance of laboratories for research and diagnostic activities running at the Department of Veterinary Medical Sciences.

The ability to apply knowledge and understanding will be assessed during oral and written exams, and through the assessment of papers produced by students to demonstrate their command of the instruments and methods which are introduced during the study programme.

The priority objectives of the degree programme include the performance of a curricular internship at a business or professional association. This offers students an introduction to the world of work, helping to guide future career choices. It therefore constitutes an opportunity for both guidance (offering students direct contact with work experience) and training (allowing them to further study and practically apply the learning gained in the degree programme). For the university, it is an opportunity to check the coherence of the degree programme curricula with the potential career opportunities available to students.
