94337 - Base Techniques into Chemistry Laboratory

Academic Year 2021/2022

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Teaching and Communication of Natural Sciences (cod. 5704)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student: a) knows the basic laboratory techniques that can be used for teaching purposes for learning chemistry; b) understands the issues related to risk and safety in chemical laboratories; c) apply simple procedures for the characterization of chemical compounds; d) knows the main laboratory equipment and their use

Course contents

During the course the appropriate methods for carrying out the procedures that are most commonly used in a school laboratory will be illustrated. Among them: separation techniques, methods for the formation of precipitates, "non-instrumental" colorimetric methods, acid-base titrations, experiences for the study of the Fundamental Chemical Laws. The main topics related to chemical risk and its prevention will be addressed.

Some of the activities presented will be accomplished in the laboratory, for others simulated data will be provided for collaborative exercises.

During the course, a reflection will be developed on the methods able to evaluate the learnings related to laboratory activities and on the metacognitive value both of the process of reflecting on the lab experience carried out by the students and of communicate the obtained results. Some evaluation rubric, designed for the evaluation of laboratory activities and related reports, will be introduced, discussed and tested.

Readings/Bibliography

For the topics addressed during the course, in addition to the lecture notes, articles, book chapters and other materials from the specialist literature will be provided by the teacher.

Teaching methods

From a methodological point of view, the presentation of the various topics will be accompanied by their didactic transposition in a chemistry laboratory.

The work in the classroom will be in part conducted adopting an active and collaborative teaching method. Some activities will be carried out using a cooperative learning approach, giving maximum space to the autonomous planning of the work by the students.

Some topics will be completed or enriched by means of individual or group activities supported on the Virtual and Teams platform.

Assessment methods

A laboratory report on one of the activities carried out in the laboratory or on a collaborative platform will be evaluated and discussed. During the discussion both the aspects of the teaching methodologies and those related to the disciplinary topics will be evaluated

Teaching tools

Blackboard, overhead projector, personal computer, video projector, power-point presentations, laboratory teaching equipment, "Virtual" e-learning platform, online collaborative tools (Teams, Google Drive, One Drive)
