Learning outcomes

The students are required to grasp a basic knowledge of the main word-processing and image-processing programmes.

Throughout the course, they are expected to acquire new competence for a conscious use of IT resources for humanities by combining traditional and 'new' tools and by the critical assessment of the potentialities and the limit of each resource. They are also expected to demonstrate their acquired skills on a specific study-topic at their choice.

Course contents

Course contents:
1. Introduction to the course. Computer and humanities: notion, history, methods, practices. Admission to the laboratories: networks and operating systems
Admission to the laboratories, regulations, passwords, right procedures. Operating systems (Win, Mac and Unix). Workstations. Intranet networking.

2. Greek, Hebrew, Non-Latin typewriting
Greek and Hebrew typewriting. Transliteration and diacritical fonts. Files and fonts compatibility (by different systems and applications). ASCII and Unicode fonts. Fonts converters and special remarks.

3. Internet for classics: philological and educational resources
On line resources for classics. Search engines, general indexes, gateways for classics. Library catalogues. The "Polo di Bologna" and "SBN" catalogues. Non-SBN and foreign opacs. Table of contents of journals of interest to classicists.

4. Bibliographical enquiry
Cd- and on line bibliographies for classics: The Année Philologique, Gnomon. Journals indexes, scrutinies, bibliographical monographies and essays. Subject bibliographies on line.

5. Classical literatures databases: introduction to the main search functions.
Presentation of the following databases: TLG online, PHI#5, PHI#7. Related search engines for Win (Workplace, Musaios, Lector).

6. Databases for Latin literature
Presentation of the following databases: ThLL, Brepolis, PHI #5, Poetria Nova, Poeti latini d'Italia. Presentation of the following databases: CLCLT6, Patrologia Latina Database, e-MGH.

7. Databases for documentary texts
Presentation of the papyrological and epigraphical databases.

8. Databases for biblical and patristic texts
Presentation of the following databases: BibleWorks, BibleWindows. Corpus Augustinianum Gissense. CLCLT6. Patrologia Latina Database.

9. Databases for Latin Medieval and Italian literatures
Presentation of databases on Cd and on line.

Readings/Bibliography

No extra literature is required, besides training's sessions, studying of tutorials and exercises suggested during the lectures.

Since the course is a lab, participation in lessons is indispensable.

Teaching methods

In addition to the lectures given by the teacher, tutorials and exercises (guided by the teacher) are also scheduled on the resources and methods dealt with during the lectures.

Assessment methods

A first assessment will be carried out to begin with in the individual exercises on tools and methods as explained in the lectures.
The final examination consists of a practical test: students should present a specimen of a research which will tackle most of the resources expound in the lectures.
