34172 - Structure Design (B)

Academic Year 2021/2022

  • Moduli: Tomaso Trombetti (Modulo 1) Tomaso Trombetti (Modulo 2)
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures (Modulo 1) Traditional lectures (Modulo 2)
  • Campus: Cesena
  • Corso: Single cycle degree programme (LMCU) in Architecture (cod. 0881)

Learning outcomes

Goal of the course is to provide practical application to the previously acquired knowldges regarding the structural behaviour of load carrying members. The applications will be developed with specific reference to concrete and steel structural skeletons.

At the end of the course the student will have sufficient skills to allow her/him to conceive and size (in gross terms) structural frames, with references to the italian code and seismic provisions.

In particular the student will get acquainted with:

1) the most common structural bearing system (moment resisting and non moment resisting frames)

2) appropriate sizing of steel column, beams, and bracing system

3) appropriate sizing of concrete column and beams

4) appropriate sizing of systems of foundations

5) develop appropriate technical drawings

6) have basic knowledge of seismic design

Presence in class is mandatory as per rules of the "corso di Laurea"

Assessment methods

The final grade will be given at the end of the course based upon an oral exam aimed at assessing the overall comprehension of the student of the course topic in Design of Structures.

According to the rules of the "corso di studi", in order to access the final oral exam the student will have to be present to a sufficient number of classes and have mastered the basic concept of the course "con profitto". This is obtained not only through a physical presence in class, but also through the development of the structural design of one steel and one reinforced concrete structure. The verification of the structural design developed will take place through two specific "seminars": one devoted to the illustration by the students of their design of the steel structure (5 to 8 marks in case of positive judgement), and one devoted to the illustration of their design of the concrete structure (5 to 8 marks in case of positive judgement).

Once granted the access to the exam (sufficient number of physical presence in class and satisfactory seminars), the student can sustain an oral examination.

The pass of the exam is guaranteed to the students that will show a sufficient capabilty in mastering the information given in class and in particular in using formulas, concepts and quantities necessary to complete a structural design of a building structure (8 to 14 marks depending on the exam preparation of each student).

A higher grade will be given to the students that not only will use with confidence the concepts given in class, but also will be capable of solving complex problems and will show a good operative capability.

Fail can be related to unsufficient knowledge of key concepts, lack of technical languate and / or insufficient operative capabilities.
