Learning outcomes

The course aims to provide students the analytical and conceptual tools to analyse formulation and implementation of strategical decisions and programmes in public and private organizations.

The course addresses some key issues for organizational analysis and human resources management, in particular: a) the behaviour of organizational actors in different types of group; b) the strategic behaviour of actors in conditions of ambiguity and uncertainty; c) decision-making processes and organizational changes planning; d) learning and innovation processes; e) the role of organizational culture in the processes of organizational change and for the management of human resources.

By the end of the course, the student will be able to:

- master the conceptual and methodological tools to recognize and understanding strategic behaviour within public and private organizations;

- interpret the relationship between structural constraints, environmental challenges and organizational strategies, both planned and unintentional;

- diagnose problems and propose appropriate solutions for human resources management.

Course contents

The course is an advanced course in Organization Theory, taught in Italian, and focusing on key characteristics and components of organizational strategy and behaviour, with specific reference to case studies and examples of real organizations.

The course is divided into two parts:

The first part deals with the topic of the relation between organizations and their external environment, with specific reference to the problem of organizational boundaries; it also focuses on the peculiar organizational structure of public sector organizations, using the concept of professional bureaucracy as proposed by Mintzberg; it recognizes the key elements and the typical dynamics of decision-making processes.

The second part deals with organizational strategies and solutions in Loosely Coupled (Weick) organizations. This part also addresses the issues of organizational culture, accidents and failures in organizations (Catino); finally, deals with most recent developments in organizational theory and analysis (Catino).

The list of mandatory readings will be collected in a reader and made available at the Copisteria Broccaindosso (via Broccaindosso 1/C) before the beginning of the course class (January).
