Academic Year 2022/2023
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student has knowledge about the design and optimized management criteria of active networks for production and transport of thermal and cooling energy. The student is also able to handle the main problems relating to the interaction of thermal and refrigeration networks with other energy transport networks (electricity, fuel, etc.)
Course contents
MODULO I
Traditional district heating and cooling networks;
Calculation of a district heating or cooling network (Todini-Pilati algorithm);
The energy production power plants;
Traditional exchange substations;
Smart exchange substations;
MODULO II
Consolidated technologies: Internal combustion engines for stationary applications; Micro gas turbines, Stirling engines;
Market-entry technologies: micro-ORC systems; Fuel cells (PEM e SOFC);
Working principle, main characteristics, Heat to electricity ratio, manufacturers and main products available on the market;
Main aspects influencing the choice and the design of a micro cogeneration or trigeneration system for residential application;
MODULO III
Cogeneration and district heating: the SEU framework and the obtainable certifications.
Energy Communities and thermal sector.
Design of district heating and cooling networks.
Optimization and management of smart district heating and cooling networks.
Please Note: for each academic year, the final course contents drawn up on the basis of the lectures will be available in the "useful contents" section of the teacher's personal page at the end of the cycle of lessonsReadings/Bibliography
didactic material provided by the teachers during the course
Teaching methods
The course consists of 6 credits divided into three modules in series: the first (2 credits) taught by prof Francesco Melino, the second (2 CFU) taught by Prof. Lisa Branchini and the third (2 CFU) taught by Prof. Maria Alessandra Ancona
All modules include theory lessons and some exercises in which some numerical examples will be presented.
Assessment methods
The examination at the end of the course aims to assess the achievement of learning objectives, verifying the knowledge that the students have acquired about design aspects, structural, functional and management of fluid machines and energy systems.
The final grade is defined by a single oral exam, testing the student's knowledge in all topics covered in the 6 CFU.
Teaching tools
teaching material presented in class will be made available to the student in electronic format via Virtuale platform.
