Learning outcomes

Identify the morphological consequences of pathological processes through slide review.

Course contents

The objective of the training is to acquire the skills to identify the main morphological features of the following pathologic conditions:

-reversible cell injury, fatty change

-necrosis and infarction

-acute inflammation

-chronic nonspecific inflammation

-granulomatous inflammation

-granulation tissue, sclerosis

-cirrhosis, amyloidosis

-atherosclerosis

-thrombosis

A slide presentation of each specimen will be available at "Insegnamenti On Line website" https://iol.unibo.it; a "virtual slide" will be available online at the digital platform: virtualmicroscopy.patologia-sperimentale.unibo.it, section "MED/04 General Pathology  

Teaching methods

The lectures will be held at the laboratory of histopathology.

The specimens will be presented at the beginning of the class by a 1 hour slide presentation and by a "real time" projection using the virtual microscopy platform. Thereafter the students will be allowed to examine the specimens on their own. A lecturer will attend this part of the lesson to provide assistance to each student. Attendance to is mandatory; the minimum attendance requirement to be admitted to the final exam is 60% of lessons.

Assessment methods

The learning skills will be assessed in the written exam of Basic mechanisms of disease. The student will be requested to briefly describe one representative picture taken from a specimen presented during the laboratory classes. A passing mark is mandatory to obtain the overall mark of the course. 

Teaching tools

the laboratory of histopathology is equipped with:

- a projection system connected with a microscope that allows the lecturer to show the specimens to all students. This system has proved useful for students with a partial visual impairment that limits vision at the microscope.

- 48 microscopes that allow each student to have his/her own access to each specimen

Tissue slides can be also reviewed “on-line” at the virtual microscopy service (virtualmicroscopy.patologia-sperimentale.unibo.it/ ).
