Course Unit Page

Academic Year 2022/2023

Course contents

The course program is composed of three sections:

  • Introduction to: fundamentals of kinematics, laws of motion and optimal transmission ratio.
  • Kinematic, dynamic and structural analysis of the main Automatic Machines mechanisms.
  • Design of mechanical components used in automatic machines.

Readings/Bibliography

  • Course slides
Luigi Biagiotti · Claudio Melchiorri, Trajectory Planning for Automatic Machines and Robots, Springer-Verlag, 2008
  • David Myszka Machines & Mechanisms: Applied Kinematic Analysis, 2012
  • Richard G. Budynas, J. Keith Nisbett, Shigley’s Mechanical Engineering Design, McGraw-Hill, 2011

Teaching methods

Teaching is organized according to the following phases:

1. Frontal teaching in the classroom on theoretical aspects.

2. Exercices on CAD drawing and numerical simulations in the computer lab.

3. Design, numerical simulation and drawing of a complex mechanism assigned to students' groups.

Assessment methods

Assessment by oral exam, during which the following topics will be discussed:

  • Exercises collected in the notebook with applied theory.
  • Technical report on the mechanism designed and developed by the students' group.

Teaching tools

  • PowerPoint presentations for lectures.
  • Creo Parametric CAD software for 3D drawing, kinematic, dynamic and structural analysis of mechanisms.
  • Computer laboratory.
