73256 - Wastewater Treatment M

Academic Year 2022/2023

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Environmental Engineering (cod. 8894)

Learning outcomes

Students achieve general expertise about location and design of wastewater treatment plants together with main rules of outfall discipline. At the end of the course students may execute preliminary design of main urban wastewater treatment plants are able to evaluate effects of their outfalls into water volumes.

Course contents

A good expertise and understanding of Hydraulic and Chemistry base subjects should be gained. Mandatory requirements are on imposed but it’s important that the student has taken care of one Environmental and Sanitary course. Fluent spoken and written Italian is a necessary pre-requisite: all lectures and tutorials, and all study material will be in Italian.

WASTEWATER TREATMENT

Part 1) Wastewater: Sewage characteristics. Technical laws. Industrial, agriculture and domestic discharge. Hygiene Municipal Regulation. Water outfall discipline. Wastewater reuse regulations. Variations in flowrate and characteristics of domestic and industrial wastewater. Treatability in rainy weather conditions.

Part 2) Wastewater treatment: Kinetics and biochemistry of bacterial and algal biomass. Growth and death in suspended and attached biomasses. Septic tanks and Imhoff tanks design. The project of a full-scale domestic wastewater treatment plant operating in steady state. Choice and location. Raw and fine screens. Sand removal. Primary sedimentation. Biodegradability and biological phases for secondary treatment. Secondary sedimentation. Active sludge plants upgrading to obtain phosphorous and nitrogen removal. Separate scheme. Wuhrmann scheme. Ludzack-Ettinger scheme. Bardenpho scheme. A2/O process. Phoredox process. Trickling filters. Granular settling biofilters. Wastewater disinfection. Treatment and disposal of sludge. Active sludge models. Sequencing batch reactors. Natural system design for wastewater treatment or finishing. Biological ponds. FWS and SFS phytotreatment. “On site” treatment for domestic wastewater coming from small communities. Building and managing costs. Functional test.

Part 3) Outfalls in water volumes: Water volumes protection and sanitary reclamation plans. Wastewater discharge in rivers . Effects of natural and domestic organic loadings on low exchange basin. Ocean and river disposal of treated and untreated wastewater. Offshore pipes. Diffusers. Aquatic ecosystem modeling criteria.

Teaching methods

Each subject developed in room lessons is coupled with applications and practical examples.

During exercise hours are analysed and discussed different real-scale biologic wastewater treatment plant projects based on attached and suspended biomass and natural appropriate treatment systems.

Assessment methods

Achievements will be assessed by the means of an oral final examination. This is based on an analytical assessment of the "expected learning outcomes" described above.

In order to properly assess such achievement the examination is composed of three questions, each related to one of three main parts of the course program: Wastewater, Wastewater treatment, Outfalls in water volumes.

To obtain a passing grade, students must demonstrate a knowledge of the key concepts of the subject and a comprehensible use of technical language.

Higher grades will be awarded to students who demonstrate an organic understanding of the subject and a good ability for critical application.

Failing grade will be awarded if the student shows knowledge gaps in key-concepts and logic failures in the analysis of the subject.

Teaching tools

Each student receives:

  1. slides and projected files used during room lessons which are previously given by the teacher
  2. a design example of an urban wastewater treatment plant receiver of a combined sewer system
  3. an harvest of existing technical laws regarding: water resources collection, outfall regulation, treatment and reuse of wastewater.
