Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student: - knows the fundamental and constitutive elements of the social service and is able to deepen its historical-cultural, theoretical and methodological aspects; - possess methodological knowledge relating to the performance of intervention and social action activities; - will be able to build gradual connections and analyze the methodological structure that guides social action; - will be able to apply basic knowledge on the organization of social services.

Course contents

The course aims to accompany students in learning the aspects that characterize the profession of the social worker, focusing on conflicts, difficulties and risks that the professional must face in everyday life.

The specific aspects of the helping relationship will be dealt with, in particular characteristics and dynamics, self-awareness, the concept of self-determination, empathy and emotional intelligence and the operational specificities of the different work areas.

Professional tools and related application methodologies will be analyzed, with particular attention to the home visit and to the documentation of the social service. With respect to the latter, definition and methodology, skills at stake, correct and not recommended behaviors, restitution and feedback techniques, strategies for managing complex and difficult situations will be proposed.

In addition, concrete cases will be proposed on which to reflect individually, in groups and in plenary in order to highlight nodes and operational lines to face the situations presented and grasp the theoretical and technical references that guide professional action.

In addition to lectures, the following can be organized:
- meetings and seminars concerning specific themes and contents of the Social Service, with particular reference to the specific areas of intervention of the Social Worker;
- meetings with experts and / or witnesses of significant experiences.

For the success of the course, the direct participation of students and their involvement in practical activities proposed and guided by the teacher will be fundamental.

[With respect to this text, students will be asked to propose a personal reflection on the chosen chapter, also connecting with what has been studied in the other texts in the bibliography and in the other courses].

4. The material of the lessons will also be shared (slides, practical cases, specific service documentation ...).

Teaching methods

The teaching methodology will be of a dialogic-interactive type, alternating more theoretical moments with discussions and debates between teacher and students. There will also be proposed exercises, case studies, group work and simulations aimed at putting into practice the skills covered by the course.

In addition, the course may be integrated with theoretical-operational seminars conducted by Social Workers or other experts who will deepen specific issues relating to the role, operation and daily practice of the Social Worker in the various areas of intervention also in collaboration with other courses. .

Assessment methods

The exam will take place through an oral interview of about 20-30 minutes.

The evaluation will be based on the following aspects:
1) the student's knowledge of the topics covered during the course and the study of the bibliography;
2) the ability to analyze, discuss and formulate operational proposals on a case;
3) the ability to identify the relevant elements on which to base professional assessments;
4) the ability to link the contents learned with professional practice and the value and ethical system.

The evaluation will be considered sufficient if a good knowledge of the basic concepts and issues addressed is evident, as well as an adequate ability to make connections and reflect on the profession of social worker.

Teaching tools

The material of the lessons will be regularly uploaded on the platform. Additional readings or viewing of audiovisual material may also be proposed.

The teacher will always be available before or after the lessons or via email for clarification or further information.

The reception will take place by appointment, where possible before and after the lessons, or via video call if necessary.
