Learning outcomes

At the end of the workshop the student will be able to collect and organize complex information in a coherent way, and apply critical analysis methods to the linguistic sciences. (S)he will be able to identify a research issue, relevant to philological research, and possess the knowledge to identify it and appropriately use necessary sources of information in order to address it.

Course contents

The seminar imparts fundamental methods and knowledge as to draft an edition of greek texts on papyrus and other materials.

Inedited papyri of different genre, text type and historical period will be deciphered, transcribed and contextualized; a selection of published papyrus texts offering textual problems or potentially belonging to other fragments will be subject of new revisions.

A special focus will lie on the study of the papyrological collection of the BUB. The students will have the opportunity to participate in the preparation of an exhibition of Bologna papyri in the BUB.

Teaching methods

Seminarial lessons which provide exercises, practical activities, research in the library and computer work.

Assessment methods

Evaluation of an individual work which will be presented during the seminar: Every student will be assigned a papyrus as study object under different point of views (philological, linguistic, historical, etc.), according to the research interests of every student.

The oral exposition as well as the written compilation will be evaluated in regard to the independence of the work, its methodological rigor, the mastery of the contents and the state of the art and the ability to express oneself precisely and clearly.

Online databases, digital images and bibliographical instruments, autoptic examination of original papyri.
